Disability: 7 days to raise awareness

As part of Disability Employment Week in France, the BlueLink Group’s Paris centre organised awareness-raising events for its staff for the 4th year running. The goal was to change mindsets and challenge stereotypes (yet another step in the company’s ‘Diversity & Disability’ strategy).

The programme of events (from 15 to 19 November) was varied

Activities organised by Cap Emploi (a network of agencies that help disabled people find work) on induction training opportunities for people with disabilities, how to declare a disability…

Sweet appetisers prepared for staff by a vocational rehabilitation centre for people with disabilities who cannot work in a conventional setting (ESAT).

Collective painting: understanding physical, psychological and mental impairments through role play.

‘Blindfolded walk’: a Paul Guinot Association workshop where participants wear special glasses and use a walking stick or are guided by another person as they move around the premises.

Introduction to the French Sign Language: a workshop organised in partnership with an association for deaf people (SERAC).

5 entertaining comic strips on disability created for BlueLink. A light-hearted way to discuss the challenges disabled people face every day: skills, prejudice, humour, induction, solidarity…

Feedback from participants

“The collective painting session surprised me because it challenges the existing stereotypes and assumptions. First, I learned to paint with reduced vision, then blindfolded. The experience was very unsettling… and certainly sharpened my senses!”

“I didn’t expect to like this experience so much. It gave me an idea of what a blind person may feel. You feel so vulnerable when you can’t see. And you are vulnerable. Even the most harmless objects can be dangerous.”

“The ‘blindfolded walk’ taught me many things... Thank you very much for this valuable sensory experience!”

“I don’t regret taking the time to attend the Sign Language workshop. I was moved by the speaker’s testimony, and I learned a lot about the world deaf people live in and how disabilities can affect everyday life. The workshop was fun and useful. I’d like to thank the speaker and the interpreter. The group’s reaction was nothing short of enthusiastic; an hour of work and pleasure! Simply great!”
